DETAILS: WAND has recently released the second edition of a curriculum for people of faith, Faith Seeking Peace, which addresses issues such as federal budget priorities, the cost of war, nuclear weapons, women's experiences of war, terrorism, and peacemaking from a Christian perspective (see www.faithwand.org and click on "curriculum" at the top to download copies of the curriculum). The purpose of this training is to equip persons interested in facilitating the Faith Seeking Peace curriculum in a congregational or organizational setting. The training is free of cost (though we will take up a love offering for the labor of peace) and open to all denominations, we welcome women and men alike to participate.

It is clear that our country is facing enormous challenges as well as opportunities. Billions of tax payer dollars are spent on an endless civil war in Iraq that cannot be won. We need to let our politicians know how deeply we care about these issues. Screening of the recently-released film "Crimes Against Humanity: The Bush Record." – August 8, 2007

This video is a 48-minute summary of the Bush Crimes Commission, which was held in New York in Sept. 2006 to gather and evaluate evidence of crimes against humanity by theBush Administration. Five areas were documented: Wars of Aggression; Torture and Indefinite Detention; Destruction of the Global Environment; Attacks on Global Public Health; and Hurricane Katrina. The video contains testimony from a wide variety of experts, including former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter, former head of US prisons in Iraq Brig. General Janis Karpinski, former diplomat and Army Col. Ann Wright, GI resister Camilo Mejia, community organizer and Katrina survivor Malik Rahim. An indictment of the Bush administration for crimes aganist humanity, based on the evidence collected by this commission, was delivered to the White House on Sept. 13, 2006. Free DVD copies of the film will be available upon request.

Against Military Recruitment in the High School – Next Planning Meeting – Friday, May 18, 2007

Under the No Child Left Behind Act, our schools are now required to provide a list to the military containing the names, addresses and phone numbers of every high school junior and senior student - UNLESS the parent states in writing that they want their child's name taken off the list. Unfortunately, this opt-out right is not made clear and explicit to every family. The information about the right to opt out is buried in the fine print of the student handbook. While this may, or may not, comply with the letter of the law, it certainly violates any real meaning of a right to opt-out.

Together, we can begin to address this serious problem of war and peace. Young people who are seeking opportunities after graduation from high school should not have to choose between life and death. Yet this is increasingly what our society's leaders are demanding, as our country's spending priorities shift increasingly to militarism and away from human needs.
