Barbara Major is by far one of the leading speakers/thinkers/critics in the areas of institutionalized racism and internalized racial oppression. She is a community organizer and trainer with over thirty years experience in many local, national, and international community development efforts. This work includes everything from nurturing leadership development efforts within local communities to assisting institutions in developing strategies to de-institutionalize racism. Originally trained in social work, Barbara is a native of New Orleans. She is most recently recognized for her work as Co-Chair of the Bring Back New Orleans Committee in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina . She is also highly acclaimed for her leadership of the community driven St. Thomas/Irish Channel Consortium, a nationally acclaimed model for holistic community and institutional transformation. Barbara has served as a key leader and trainer with two of the more prominent national organizations which lead in organizing communities to dismantle/undo racism in the U.S., the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond and Crossroads Ministries.
