Project HOPE: Confronting Gangs in Greensboro – August 2, 2007

Project HOPE is a collaboration of religious congregations that wish to reach out to youth who are being attracted into gangs. The gang problem has been growing dramatically in the Greensboro area recently. Many immigrant and refugee children are being drawn into gangs. They are attracted to the gangs because they find it so difficult to "fit in" or be accepted by other social institutions in our community, including religious organizations. If you are concerned about gangs and wish to see your religious congregation involved creatively in addressing this issue, come to the next meeting of Project HOPE.

Youth Gangs – What Churches Need to Know! What Churches Can Do! – February 27, 2007

Sponsored by the Project Hope with nationally respected gang expert Detective Ernest Cuthbertson, from 6:30 until 8:30 at the Central Library, 219 North Church Street in downtown Greensboro. (Note: this is for adults only, no youth will be admitted.)

12:15-1:30 p.m. at the Folk Teen Center (3910 Clifton Rd. - off of W. Wendover, High Point Rd, and Spring Garden St).

This meeting is open to all youth serving people including those in nonprofit organizations and religious organizations. We will be discussing two important topics - the growing sub culture and influence of gangs on our teens and children and the Hope Project- a community wide collaboration focusing on this issue. It may, in fact, be two meetings due to the amount of content.

We need your help with the Hope Project. We can have all the greatest programs for youth in the world, but if these young men and ladies go to sleep at night and the only thing they believe in is themselves we will only get so far. Come join us on the 30th, eat lunch and find out more. Please RSVP we can account for the lunch order and pass this message along to anyone you feel will be interested in joining us. The more the merrier.

The theme this year, "Congregations Stand for Healthy Children: Bringing Hope and Healing," will provide a chance to highlight the unmet health needs of children in our community. If your congregation has not yet signed up, please contact Julia Holt at 379-0037 or email cc-events@earthlink.net. We can provide you with a free copy of the Children's Defense Fund Children's Sabbath Planning Manual with excellent resources from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Baha'i perspectives. Scores of churches, synagogues, and temples already have signed up to celebrate the presence of children and to acknowledge the many unmet needs of children during their worship that weekend.
